If MIA was still bubbling under the surface of mainstream pop after her 2005 Mercury Music Prize nomination, then the success of the film Slumdog Millionnaire put an end to that, once and for all. Her groundbreaking song “Paper Planes” fitted the mood of the opening sequence perfectly, and also featured throughout the film.

UK born Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam spent much of her childhood in her family’s native Sri Lanka, a country then torn apart by civil war. The profound effect the troubles had on Maya’s family have stayed with her through to adulthood, her urban sounds are littered with political comment and intelligent observation of the modern world.

Very much the all-round “pop” artist, Maya’s talents don’t stop at songwriting…she’s also a graphic designer, photographer and boss of her own record label as well as a charity worker and political activist! Her new eponymous album sees Maya at the forefront of modern urban pop, taking in elements of electro, disco, R&B, soul and world fusion, whilst still keeping its finger on the pulse of the South London underground.
