After leaving the Byrds, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman pursued their vision of “cosmic American music” with a new outfit, the Flying Burrito Brothers. Their debut album, THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN, included the superb covers of two southern soul standards, “The Dark End Of The Street” and “Do Right Woman” alongside the classic country-rock of Parson’s “Hot Burrito #1”, “Sin City”, and the impassioned “Hot Burrito #2”. Although it made very little commercial impact on its 1969 release, the album laid the foundations for the country-rock behemoths the Eagles, and became a touchstone for the 1990s alt-country generation. The follow up album, BURRITO DELUXE, was never able to match the artistic achievement of the debut album, and Parson’s soon quit to pursue his solo career. Various incarnations of the band continued to tour and record into the 1990, but were at best a pale imitation of the original.
