Originally released on May 19th 2008, and performed as the pinnacle of Sparks Spectacular – in which Sparks played a record breaking 21 albums in 21 nights in London (one album each night) – ‘Exotic Creatures Of The Deep’ is now released on vinyl for the first time. Remastered, and pressed on coloured heavyweight vinyl, this reissue also includes the bonus track ‘Brenda’s Always In The Way’, previously released as the B-side of the 7” vinyl single ‘Lighten Up Morrissey’.

“Exotic Creatures Of The Deep: human, and others. They’re present and accounted for in our new album. Come and meet them.” Sparks, Los Angeles, Spring 2008. The result of a year spent in near-isolation in their Los Angeles studio ‘Exotic Creatures Of The Deep’ followed Ron and Russell Mael’s previous two acclaimed records – 2002’s much-feted and genre-generating ‘Lil’ Beethoven’ and 2006’s extraordinary ‘Hello Young Lovers’ – to complete a trilogy on which pop-opera, rock and high drama combined to redefine Sparks’ sound.

The accompanying world tour saw Sparks and their band play a set that was euphoric, vital, brilliant and uncompromisingly typical of a band that refuses to rest on their laurels. The new songs (from ‘Hippopotamus’ including ‘Edith Piaf Said It Better Than Me’, ‘What The Hell Is It This Time?’ & ‘Missionary Position’) sounded like classics, the classics (including ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both of Us’, ‘Amateur Hour’ and ‘The Number One Song In Heaven’) sounded as vibrant and essential as ever, and audiences, and critics, were left in no doubt this genre-hopping band is on sparkling form.
