Ging’s We’re Here, My Dear is a bold and intimate statement from a prodigious musician finding new and dazzling ways to spread his creative wings. Adam Feeney’s debut album finds him stepping out of the production booth and away from his Frank Dukes alias to deliver a heartfelt, nostalgic, and distinctly left-of-center spin on pop and rock music—possessing a classic feel while also sounding not quite like much else out there right now. These nine songs are the result of self-discovery amidst isolation and heartbreak, as Feeney digs deep to chart a new path in his own newly unfamiliar world. It’s a journey you won’t be able to resist taking alongside him. We’re Here, My Dear may be Feeney’s proper debut as Ging, but there’s no doubt that you’ve already been listening to his music for years. As Frank Dukes, Feeney had a hand in countless hits from artists like Post Malone, Drake, Rihanna, Young Thug, Lorde, and the Weeknd—but in November of last year, he decided to retire his production alias and pursue making music on his own. It was a decision several years in the making, the result of Feeney taking time to explore his own inner world. “For so long, I’ve been living by instinct,” he explains while reflecting on the decision. “I never gave as much space to my inner life. Forming a concept of my own inner world is what gave me space to choose what I wanted to do at that moment in my life.” And the isolation afforded by the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic afforded Feeney space to really dig in and explore his own sounds. “I went into the studio every day and tried to be as free as possible and explore anything that came out,” he explains, describing the feeling of writing the album’s burst-and-bloom opening title track, with only a guitar in his hands, as a pivovatl moment for Ging as a flesh-and-blood project. “When I finished writing that and could perform it in full, I knew I’d broken through to something larger.” Feeney describes the album’s genesis as emerging “out of a sense of urgency regarding what I was feeling at that very moment,” with sounds and styles reflective of the music he grew up with, including the wide-ranging rock sounds of the ‘90s and the Beatles’ classic pop songwriting styles.
