Millicent Dolly May Small, known to the world as Millie Small, had a handful of minor local Jamaican hits under her belt when the legendary Chris Blackwell took her under his wing – and to London – in 1963. There they cut the Ernest Ranglin arranged version of “My Boy Lollipop” that would make her an international star. Reaching #2 on both the UK and US singles charts, the instantly recognizable classic was very important in the history of reggae music as it was the first Blue Beat (a predecessor to Ska and Reggae) song to chart outside of Jamaica. Though not just a historical document, the song is a classic dance track that still keeps the party going today. Though “My Boy Lollipop” was her biggest hit, Millie was no “one-hit wonder” and this classic Blue Beat LP from 1964 is chock full of dance floor fillers. Essential.
