Recorded live at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen on 30/31 January, 1965.

Ben Webster tenor saxophone; Kenny Drew piano; Niels-Henning Orsted-Pedersen bass; Alex Riel – drums.

As the title of this album states, one of Webster’s best features were his interpretations of ballads which, with the exception of ‘Perdido’, ‘Mack The Knife’ and ‘Indiana’, conform the program for this set. “Musicians sometimes take a ballad and, just for the fun of it, play it up-tempo,” said Webster during an interview. “I don’t do that. If the lyrics were meant to be delivered slowly, thoughtfully, then it would be inappropriate to play the music at a fast tempo. Think of the lyrics to ‘Body and Soul’, for instance. Would you sing them fast? Of course not. Then why would you play the music fast?” Ballads are delivered here in Webster’s, delicate, profound and intimate way.
