The King of Rock ‘n’ Soul – the great Solomon Burke – released his album “Don’t Give Up On Me” in 2002, an album featuring songs by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello, Dan Penn and Nick Lowe.
None of the songs have been previously recorded by other artists. Elvis Costello’s contribution, The Judgement, was written specifically for Solomon Burke.
Solomon Burke, born in 1936 († 2010), belongs in the firmament of Sixties soul singers. An ordained minister, Burke’s youth was steeped in gospel music. Indeed, such was his reputation that Burke even had his own gospel radio show called Solomon’s Temple.
