‘As If’ is the apex of !!!’s output – a notorious DNA of punk abandon, compelling songwriting and tightly-coiled dance music – making this album their most accomplished and infectious collection of songs yet.

The band quote current house music (Nina Kraviz, Moodymann, Delroy Edwards, to name a few) and early 1990s labels like Trax and Dancemania as influences for this record but there are clear links to disco and funk like ESG in this album as well. !!!’s raw passion for music of many different eras and genres really shines through on ‘As If’, more so than on any of their previous albums.

Opener ‘All U Writers’, which was playlisted at BBC Radio 6Music, is a result of a week long jamming session in Sacramento that took on a life and structure of its own. Lead radio single ‘Freedom! ‘15’ is a disco odyssey of sorts and a shining example of what the band can do live. Jump between ‘Every Little Bit Counts’, ‘Lucy Mongoosey’ and ‘Til The Money Runs Out’ and you’ll find references to Motown, Dorothy Parker style beats and a jacked up house tune about a lust filled road trip. In short, there’s never a dull moment in ‘As If’.
