RICHARD STRAUSS Don Quixote Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche Paul Tortelier Berliner Philharmoniker Rudolf Kempe

Op. 35/ Till Eulenspiegel/ Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra/ Kempe

Sessions for the two works on this record took place in Grunewald Church, Berlin, during June 1958. Rudolf Kempe was famous for his Strauss Interpretations, and he made an extensive survey of this composer’s works in the 1970s with the Staatskapelle, Dresden. This earlier Berlin coupling, however, is held in particularly high regard by collectors as high water mark of Kempe’s art and of Strauss interpretation. InDon Quixote, the cello soloist is the renowned French artist Paul Tortelier, who had played the work under the baton of the composer himself. In his original Gramophone review, William Mann aptly described the recording as “glowing, burnished copper, effortlessly enjoyable to listen to.” Testament has taken great care to reproduce the nature of the original sound in the most faithful manner possible, and pressing are on high-quality 180 gram virgin vinyl.
