As a founding member of the Americana group Paper Bird, Esme Patterson’s songwriting is at the heart of the folk and roll explosion in Denver, USA.

Never one to have too many irons in the fire, Patterson appears on other notable artist’s records and has performed on both Letterman and Leno as a backup singer for Tennis. Most recently she has collaborated with Shakey Graves and Nathaniel Rateliff.

‘Woman to Woman’, a concept album, is her second solo release. The songs on are responses to famous popular songs that aims to give a voice to the women immortalized in the these tracks: Jolene (Dolly Parton), Alison (Elvis Costello), Loretta (Townes Van Zandt), Caroline (The Beach Boys), Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles), Evangeline (The Band), and Irene (Leadbelly).

“They are archetypes from famous songs, frozen forever in black and white,” she says. “I did my best to add some color and give them some humanity.”

The 7-track album released in North America has been praised by New York Times, Paste, NPR and even Elvis Costello in response to his track ‘Alison’. The album has been extended to a 10 track album for release for rest of the world.

“Her voice is wiry and candid, backed by arrangements that roll along the folk-country borderline. Some songs proclaim self-determination and defiance; others, like ‘The Glow’ – imagining the Beach Boys’ Caroline – hint at mystery and mortality. ” – New York Times
