This record occupies a special place in Lalo Schifrin’s multifarious production. The album’s very title promises to reveal the whole Schifrin, this icon of Brazilian bossa, who departs from the broad path of Latin music but never fails to pour fresh water on the mills of his native country’s tapping rhythms. Even the very first number, “Secret Code Synthesizer” is experimental: this is probably the first attempt to create two-and-a-half minutes of music out of the electronically produced sound of a flute and the click-click-click of Indian tabla drums. In “Vaccinated Mushrooms” Schifrin proves that he is just as capable of musical parody as Frank Zappa. Whoever manages to make the honky-tonk piano rock as it does with such provocative, glassy far-sightedness must truly have humor. “Keep Smiling” is the motto here.
