After disbanding Little Feat at the end of the ‘70s, singer and guitarist Lowell George recorded this revered solo album before his untimely death. Thanks I’ll Eat It Here (1979) picked up where George left off his musical influence five years earlier on Little Feat’s Dixie Chicken. Whether due to drugs or disinterest, the musical course of Little Feat was left in the hands of his band mates, making the band a seminal fusion band like no other. George apparently didn’t care less for Jazz Rock if Thanks I’ll Eat It Here is anything to go by – it’s an eclectic album of near legendary proportions. It contains a variety of cover versions (by artists such as Allen Toussaint and Memphis Soul legend Ann Peebles) interspersed with his own original compositions. If only there were more of the latter, as sadly George did not live to see the ’80s. Note the covert art: an interpretation of a Manet painting featuring Bob Dylan, Marlene Dietrich and Fidel Castro enjoying a cosy picnic.
