Otto Klemperer was a great champion on Mendelssohn’s orchestral works throughout his long career. There is a tendency for interpreters to play this composer’s output in a superficial manner, but Klemperer uniquely brought out the strength and character in the music, and thus revealed its true stature more tellingly than perhaps any other interpreter. This towering but still elegant and charming interpretation of the Scottish Symphony was recorded in January 1960, when Klemperer was at the peak of his powers during the last and most successful phase of his career. With the Philharmonia Orchestra in vintage form and first-rate recording quality achieved by the engineers under the direction of the legendary producer Walter Legge, this was an outstanding LP production which has been memorably re-created by Testament in its latest vinyl production.
