Strawbs started in the late 60’s as an acoustic folk-band. The album they initially put together was a pop masterpiece – the label, however, thought they’d signed progressive folkies rather than pop hopefuls, and, despite having spent large wedges of cash already, Cousins and co. were asked to return to the studio to replace some of the more pop-oriented material with more appropriate folk-based material, which they did. The second sessions also produced Cousins’ epic “The Battle”, a sign of things to come. The album as released received critical acclaim, though not commercial success. The single from the album The Man Who Called Himself Jesus was, predictably, banned by the BBC.
