RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade, Op.35 Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Sir Thomas Beecham

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade is one of the most frequently-recorded large scale orchestral showpieces, and among many fine versions on record Sir Thomas Beecham is probably the most famous of all. The work’s rich and imaginative scoring, and its combination of delicate romance and open-hearted, passionate energy suited England’s finest conductor perfectly. Beecham had the gift of bringing out the best in his studio colleagues, and in this superlative recording of March 1957, expertly engineered in stereo by the experienced Christopher Parker, the score’s drama and subtlety are perfectly realised. Testament’s reissue, produced to exactly the same criteria as the original stereo release, enables the listener to re-live the excitement experienced by record buyers when the record was first issued in 1958.
