Sony Music CMG are proud to present these x5 Janis Ian reissues, released 25th May. The albums – “Stars”, “Between The Lines”, “Aftertones”, “Miracle Row”, “Night Rains” – represent Janis’ core albums originally released on Columbia between 1974 and 1978, when Janis firmly established herself as a platinum-selling international artist. With x7 Grammy nominations and x1 Grammy win across the albums, this body of work is a benchmark in quality amongst the greatest female singer-songwriters of our times. Released on heavyweight (180gm) vinyl, the albums have been fully remastered from original analogue tapes in a process overseen by Janis and Steve Berkowitz (famed for his remastering work on Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Paul Simon, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, and Jeff Buckley). The vinyl reissues carefully replicate the original packaging. Making her first UK appearance since 2014, Janis is one of this year’s Cambridge Folk Festival (August) headliners. We’re in the process of setting up promo for while she’s in market, and so far have offers from Radio 2 ‘Sounds Of The Seventies’ and Radio 4 ‘Loose Ends’. We’ve locked in a huge feature with Songwriter Magazine, and targeting coverage in the music monthlies also, supported by press ads in relevant titles. Janis is a prodigal talent; x10 times Grammy nominated, across x8 different categories (and three times winner), she is a songwriter’s songwriter. Her fans include Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Dolly Parton, Jimi Hendrix, Bette Midler, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, and Cher. Artists who have recorded her songs include Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, Glen Campbell, and Celine Dion. Her 1967 breakthrough hit in the US – ‘Society’s Child’ – was a significant moment in music. Released at the height of the Civil Rights movement, the song told the story of an interracial romance whose narrator ends the relationship because of social pressure. Its impact cannot be over-estimated, it brought hostility from US radio stations and enraged the right. Janis was just 15 years old. What has followed since then is an engaging career story of ups and downs.; to quote Janis herself: “I wrote my first song at 12, was published at 13, made a record at 14, had a hit at 15, and was a has-been at 16. So, “At Seventeen” means more to me than you can know.” We acquired much of Janis’ catalogue in 2015 and released Janis Ian: The Essential 2.0 last year, so these reissues are the latest phase in our catalogue rejuvenation plans. Her signature song is, of course, “At Seventeen”, but the reissues represent an opportunity for another profile push, across both formats. Her musical output is an important one and our aim with the whole project is to reposition/reintroduce Janis and help her music achieve the recognition it truly deserves.
