Limited Edition 180g Audiophile Vinyl Mastered by Joe Reagoso With Ron McMaster From Original Capitol Records Tapes!

Starting in the 1940s playing with Ray Charles, saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley was quickly becoming a legend in his own time thanks to his sophisticated style of playing jazz while incorporating a knack of crossing over to a mainstream audience. After many solid albums for Mercury and Riverside, Adderley jumped over to Capitol Records and in 1966 had the whole world groovin’ to his top chart pop, soul and jazz smash Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.

Composed by the visionary keyboardist legend Joe Zawinul, this tune would go on to make Cannonball Adderley’s marquee value climb even higher as the birth of fusion was now taking form with this classic album and smash hit single.

Recorded live in front of a very enthusiastic audience, the legendary Cannonball Adderley and Co. rip through six burnin’ jazz classics truly shaping the way a much larger audience could appreciate the brilliant musicianship. Starting things off with E. Rodney Jones classic introduction, the band tears into brother Nat Adderley’s classic Fun.

There is no breathing room here as the powerful quintet follow things up with another bop classic Games and then of course the smash hit Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. With Cannonball’s famous rap beginning things, the song just cools out for a moment with the band smokin’ with the familiar riff, and then of course, the late great Joe Zawinul’s masterful keyboard work.

You can hear him pounding on the electric Wurlitzer unlike anyone before or since, again creating that fusion sound which he and brethren like Wayne Shorter would progress first with Miles Davis, and then on their own as the groundbreaking Weather Report. But it all starts here with this soulful hit album.

If you dig the west coast sound, The Jazz Crusaders’ Victor Gaskin is found playing his great bass technique throughout, which surely hits home with tracks like Sticks and the album closer Sack ‘O Woe, rounding things out rhythmically with drumming legend Roy McCurdy (Wes Montgomery, Blood Sweat & Tears).
