Wonder producer turned artist Kwes releases a concise mission statement of reconstructed, homemade and quintessentially English ‘Free Pop’.

24 year old Kwes has always been ahead of his game when it comes to music. He’s produced material for Speech Debelle and DELS, collaborated with Micachu, Ghostpoet, The Invisible and more on the ‘Kwesachu’ mixtape series, worked with The xx on early demos, and Damon Albarn on the DRC Music project.

‘Bashful’, the lead track from this release, is a shuffle of disco, meticulously melodic and tinged with flashes of soul, R&B and house. Kwes simply describes this as ‘Free Pop’… “A philosophy of creating popular music that knows no boundaries, shuns no eccentricity and values inventiveness over any kind of rules that have gone before”. ‘Bashful’, recently given its first play on Huw Stephens’ Radio 1 show, demonstrates this idea perfectly.

Kwes has only played a handful of shows, debuting his new-soul vocals and huge talent first in November at The Shacklewell Arms, which sold out. This was then followed with gigs for John Kennedy, Huw Stephens and HMV at the Next Big Thing festival. He’s now due to play at key tastemaker festivals on both sides of the Atlantic with slots at SXSW, Camden Crawl and The Great Escape.

Kwes’ next London show is a special collaborative event with Micachu at Southbank Centre on the 5th of May, featuring a collaborative set and a full Kwes live set.
