Gonsalves first professional engagement was with the Sabby Lewis band in Boston. On leaving Lewis he played with Count Basie from 1946-49, was briefly with Dizzy Gillespie, and then joined Duke Ellington in 1950. Gonsalves remained with Ellington for the rest of his life, his occasional absences from the band resulting from his addiction to alcohol and narcotics.
Love Calls (1967/8) is an album of duets Gonsalves cut with Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. In such performances, the quality of the playing perhaps reflect the man himself: Gonsalves was a sensitive yet fragile human being.

Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis made his first significant impact on jazz during his stint with Count Basie, beginning in 1952 and extending through the 1960s. He retired from playing in 1963 to become a booking agent, but was soon coaxed out of retirement by Count Basie, whom he rejoined as a regular fixture in his band. Towards the end of the 60s and into the 70s Eddie continued to collaborate with a number of his (equally talented) peers.
