In 1967 Gainsbourg, who turned 40 the following year, had a short but ardent love affair with Brigitte Bardot, to whom he dedicated the song and album Initials BB. Originally released in 1968, the album is Gainsbourg’s eighth release. In 2010, the French edition of Rolling Stone named it the 14th greatest French rock album. In 2017, Pitchfork placed it at No.117 on the “200 Best Albums of the 1960s” list. Pitchfork’s Ben Cardew wrote: “It evokes London fog and Parisian élan, contemporary pop nous and eternal orchestral splendour, in a way that makes even the most modish Anglo-American pop acts of the era look spectacularly ungainly.”
