Contemporaries of The Wailers, featuring Bob Marley, Toots And The Maytals formed in early 60s Jamaica when Frederick “Toots” Hibbert met Ralphus “Raleigh” Gordon and Nathaniel “Jerry” Pen. Best known for their close harmony gospel vocals, the reggae act first came to wider prominence when they were included on the soundtrack to Jimmy Cliff’s 1972 movie, The Harder They Come. Released in 1973, Funky Kingston was their first album to be produced by Island Records’ Chris Blackwell, and among Hibbert’s original compositions, the album also includes a cover of the Richard Berry classic ‘Louie, Louie’ as well as Ike Turner’s ‘I Can’t Believe’.
