With four of the original six members, The Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats are back together with their first studio album in over 35 years ‘Citizens Of Boomtown’. Formed in 1975, the group led by Bob Geldof, swept into the Irish and UK charts in 1977 with “Lookin’ After No.1” arriving off the back of the burgeoning punk/new wave scene. They hit their peak of popularity between 1978-80 scoring a brace of hit singles in both countries whilst broadening their sound – “Rat Trap” and “I Don’t Like Mondays” were back to back No.1s in the UK and the latter track was a smash all over Europe.

As the hits began to dry up Geldof tried his hand at acting appearing in the lead role of “Pink” in the film adaptation of Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ in 1982. Of course, he became best known as the driving force behind Band Aid and Live Aid in the mid-1980s raising money and awareness for African people short of food and medicine. The band called it day after this and Geldof went solo while the rest of the band went off in other directions forming other groups and moving into production.

And now the group have finally played the “get back together” card after resisting the temptation until now. The first song to be aired from the new record sound like the title suggests: “Trash Glam Baby” evoking the spirits of 1970s both the Glam Rock sound and the loosness of New Wave. It owes a debt to 1990s band Suede to our ears as well!
