The first performance of Simeon Ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato took place on April 25th 1979 in the Ruïnekerk in Bergen (The Netherlands) and was realized using three pianos and an electronic organ. Since its premiere, Canto Ostinato grew out to be a hypnotizing masterpiece, revered by audiences and composers all over the world.

The 90-minute piece is divided into sections, each divided into smaller sections of repetitive melodies. Interpreting artists are free to decide themselves how they vary these smaller pieces and for how long they repeat them. Many people call a performance of Canto Ostinato a mesmerizing ritual, a trip, a life altering experience.

One of the very best interpretations of Canto Ostinato has been recorded in 2008 by Sandra and Jeroen van Veen (1969), husband and wife. The duo adapted Canto to be played on two grand pianos. Their breakthrough album eventually sold in more than 40 countries worldwide.
