‘Stan Getz’s Café Montmartre was recorded in two memorable live sessions at Copenhagen’s famous jazz club. The first took place on 6th July 1987, when he was joined by a superb quartet featuring pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Ben Riley; the second recording took place during March 1991, a duet date alongside Barron. Café Montmartre, first released in 2002, represents the final significant recording from a truly great tenor saxophone player who influenced everyone from John Coltrane to Melody Gardot. Memorable cuts on the album include a haunting take on Billy Strayhorn’s ‘Blood Count’; a spellbinding, sparse version of Charlie Haden’s ‘First Song’; a classic duet take on Mal Waldron’s timeless ‘Soul Eyes’; and a mesmerising treatment of Benny Golson’s tribute to trumpeter Clifford Brown.
